The first cycling club in Lancaster was the ‘Vale of Lune Bicycle Club’ founded in 1879 but disbanded in 1882. After a few years the first ‘Lancaster Cycling Club’ was formed in 1887. The Captain of this club for all bar the first few months of its existence until it was also disbanded was Mr. Sam Dawson (pictured) and he wrote an excellent evocative book entitled ‘Incidents in the Course of a Long Cycling Career’.
The present Lancaster Cycling Club was founded back in 1924 and membership varies from year to year but is usually in the 50s to 60s. Members range from early teens to well past retirement age.
Our race programme varies from year to year, but often includes open and club time trials at 10, 25 & 50 miles, hilly TTs & SpoCo events, hill climb events, road racing at Salt Ayre Cycling Track and weekly evening Time Trials in conjunction with the Salt Ayre Cog Set on the closed circuit at Salt Ayre.
Bradley Wiggins set a new 10-mile TT record of 17:58 on the super-fast Levens course at one of our open events in 2006.
